Marin Nail Trail

Back to list

The first (piece of) bicycle I collected from the metal scrap heap was a Marin Nail Trail frame. The frame was intact, except for a few scratches. The wheels, all cables, and one pedal were missing.

Restoration

  • Missing pedal: I mounted a Shimano pedal (also collected from the metal scrap heap). It is not the same as the other pedal, but it does not really matter. Sometime I will change the complete crankset, when I find a good one on the scrap heap.
  • Gears: I bought 2 new gear cables and cable housing, and re-cabled the gears. Front and rear derailleur were OK. Gear levers looked ok.
  • Brakes: I bought 2 new brake cables and cable housing, and some components to attach the main cable to the little cables that connect the levers on which the pads are mounted.
  • I bought a new saddle post from BBB. Saddle taken from other MTB

Specs

  • Frame: Marin Nail Trail, aluminium 7005, light grey with purple decorations.
  • Handlebars and horns: purple T6 aluminium
  • Crankset: Shimano Exage (missing one pedal)
  • Gears: Shimano Deore LX
  • Wheels: 26" with Ritchey Tom Slick tires

I used this bike for commuting, or as a city bike. It can go fast thanks to the slick tires, and remains comfortable in an urban landscape. EXCEPT when it rains! The slicks are treacherous on wet ground. So not a good commuter after all...

To do

The shift lever for the back derailleur does not work reliably. I should fix/replace it
